Q: Why is the step salary system so important?

A: It is critical for preserving fairness in salaries, and eliminating salary anomalies and compression.
See Ed Dover's explanation here.

Q: What is "fair share", and why do non-union-members pay it?

A: "Fair share" is a common system in unions which requires people who are represented by the union but not members of the union to pay regular fees to help cover the expenses the union incurs in representing them. The idea is that even these non-members are receiving significant benefits from being represented, and it costs money to provide these benefits to them, so it is only fair that they pay for them. Chief among these benefits is the salary increases that all WOU faculty have received over the years due to the hard work of the union in collective bargaining. Basically, fair share fees prevent non-members from being "free-riders".

WOUFT's costs include dues to the national AFT and AFT-Oregon, AFL-CIO, Marion-Polk-Yamhill Labor Council, insurance, and clerical expenses. We also have special costs when we sponsor a rally or charter a bus to take people to Eugene to demonstrate at an OUS Board Meeting (as we did a couple of years ago).

Costs that fair-share members do not pay are for political activities the union engages in, such as partisan lobbying for causes that favor higher education.
